At the Trexler Nature Preserve, autumn olive was progressively invading natural areas and covering old roads.
Autumn olive tolerates poor soil conditions and if not cleared can alter the processes of natural succession. The nitrogen-fixing capabilities of autumn olive can interfere with the nitrogen cycle of native communities that may depend on infertile soils.
Clearing the autumn olive
For the past six months, we have been busy clearing autumn olive from the fields at TNP.
As the autumn olive was removed, old roads were uncovered.
