After-School Program: B-Smart is an after-school enrichment program for area middle school students, especially at-risk youth, that blends traditional visual arts with the latest digital and computer technologies.  It features graphic design and Web design classes, as well as exploration of the visual arts, including painting, drawing, photography and ceramics.

The after-school programs ideally provide creative activities, conducted by caring and trained adults, which engage the interest of children on a daily basis.  The curriculums should be rigorous and fun, should complement the school day and challenge the students both mentally and physically.

Community Bike Works provides inner-city children living in at-risk situations meaningful work-ethic alternatives to gangs, drugs and the streets.  Using adult and youth mentors, they develop nurturing relationships encouraging bright futures.  Entry into Community Bike Works is through Earn A Bike
Earn A Bike--kids ages 9-17 sign a contract and commit to a minimum of 24 hours in Earn A Bike.  In twelve two-hour sessions, kids receive instruction in bike mechanics, bike safety, employment skills, communication skills and business concepts as they work on their bikes and help others fix their bikes.  This work incentive program provides each participant the opportunity to earn a bicycle and helmet.  All programs are offered free for all participants 17 years of age or younger.
Reading & Homework Program--any participant ages 9-17, new or old, may receive reading help two to three times a week.  Kids who need help are teamed with a college student to work on their reading skills.  Each reader takes a reading assessment test at the start and at the end of each three month program.
Earn A Part--kids ages 9-17 are given the opportunity to earn computers, books, bicycle parts and accessories and more.
Peer Instructors--Participants ages 12 and up who complete the Earn A Bike Program may continue by becoming an Earn A Bike Instructor.  Ultimately, they become the instructors and facilitate the entire program.  They promote the sustainability of leaders and volunteers.
Youth Apprentices--participants ages 14 and up who have volunteered as peer instructors may continue by enrolling the Bicycle Mechanics Course, which prepares the individual for employment as an entry level mechanic in a bike shop.  Upon completion, they may apply to be paid apprentices.

Young & Wise After School Program--assists 35 youth in meeting the goals of "succeeding in school" by providing homework assistance and educational projects in the area of science and math, and enhances the quality of life by providing a safe environment that meets multiple basic needs.

Partners in Progress program, provides tutoring for students at risk of not graduating from high school.  The program is held 3:00-5:00 on Tuesdays.

Lehigh Valley Summerbridge at Moravian Academy

The School Year Program: during the school year, local high school and college students volunteer one or more afternoons a week to tutor with LV Summerbridge students at their schools.  Together they complete homework, study for tests, and work on projects.  In addition, students are introduced to a unit or theme designed by their tutoring site's supervisor.  Themes have included bridge dynamics, roller coaster engineering, music interpretation and marketing, among others.  Students also participate in monthly field trips including local college visits, hiking, ice skating, laser tag, and trips to the movies and theatrical productions.

South Bethlehem Neighborhood Center 
After School Homework Club for students in the South Bethlehem area, in grades 1-6.  Transportation is not included.  The program is designed to provide a focus on homework completion in a structured atmosphere.  It also includes life skills development, community service, field trips, and other educational activities.  Recreational activities are scheduled to provide rewards and maintain interest in the program.  Attempts are made to establish a line of communication with the participants' teachers to monitor the students; progress and identify areas of poor achievement for remedial actions.
Middle School Youth Group for students from Lynfield only, in grades 6-8.  Transportation is not provided.  The program is designed to provide a safe and supportive atmosphere where students may complete homework, participate in community service projects, participate in theme activities and participate in social and recreational field trips.  Scheduled activities include discussion groups that explore sensitive social and moral topics.

Trexler Middle School
Trexler Middle School is launching a new afterschool art and literature program from 3:15-4:45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The program will begin Tuesday, January 26, 2010 and will continue for 8 weeks in collaboration with the Lehigh Valley Arts Council.  For information, contact Mrs. Anderson at andersonl@allentownsd.org
